Dear diary,
I’m beginning a journey across Canada. Starting in Campbell River.
I was riding on my bike in the Beaverlodge land trail when I heard a tap tap tap. I looked up and there was a woodpecker with bright colors. It was making a hole in a big oak tree. I stopped and it looked at me. Then I carried on, wondering what I’d be seeing next. I knew there were cougars, bald eagles and squirrels. But I never knew that there was bright colored woodpeckers. Then right in front of me a cougar jumped up from the bush it scared me but did not attack me. It ran across the trail. I pedaled faster and it was gone.

I wanted to hurry out of the Beaverlodge lands after being scared by the cougar. I did not want to be scared again! I hurried out of the forest. I was riding along the road when I saw a mother and baby deer. The baby looked up at me with a mouth full of grass. When the mom was scared they both ran away and I carried on pedaling my bike. The sun felt good on my back but it made me feel sweaty so I decided to pull over and rest in the shade. I looked up and in the distance I could see the mountains --they sparkled like diamonds. I got back onto my bike and rode away feeling the wind on my face!

The sun went down so I had to go back to my cabin. Early in the morning I woke up and drove to BC ferries. It was a long wait so I got out and looked around. I took some pictures. When I heard a HONK HONK! So I got back in my car and drove onto the ferry. I slept the rest of the way. I was awakened by an announcement “we are nearing the terminal, please return to all vehicles.” When I got in my car I could smell the ocean - it smelled good! When I got there I had lunch at Bob’s Seafood then drove some more. By the time I got to a hotel it was dark. When I got in I threw my stuff on the couch and fell fast asleep! I did not want to get up in the morning, but I did.

I got up and drove though the Rocky Mountains. The mountains felt like a ride at Disneyland! I did not know that I had shocks on my car. The shocks made it bumpier! I looked out my window and saw a puppy. It looked lost so I stopped and got out of the car. It had no collar so I kept it. We carried on up the Rocky Mountains and the dog looked car sick. The dog was black and white with a bit of golden brown colorings. I named the dog Yoda. Yoda has a white tip on his tail and a white tip on his nose. We finally reached Alberta and even Yoda seemed happy. Yoda acted like he had been to Alberta before.

Today we went to New Brunswick. New Brunswick is a bilingual province, where people speak both French and English. We went to Bathurst, in northern New Brunswick, the place where I was born and lived at until I was 5 years old. Bathurst is a small city, where people speak mostly French. The Acadians live there, and their culture can be seen everywhere - from their cooking to the Acadian flag that many people fly in their yards. On our drive to Bathurst, we saw a moose crossing the highway in front of us. It was big. It was exciting to see a moose in the wild. During our trip, we also visited Moncton, a city in southern New Brunswick. While there, we went shopping in a big mall called Champlain Place. It was fun. After shopping, my cousins and I went to Crystal Palace, a big indoor amusement park. We went on lots of rides, played games, and went in a big ball pit. I really liked the rollercoasters. It was nice to visit New Brunswick, it is a cool place, and it is one of my favourite places in Canada.

Today I went to Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia is the second smallest province in Canada. I visited Halifax, which is the capital of Nova Scotia. We went on the Harbour Hopper, an amphibious vehicle, that goes on both land and water, which took us on a guided tour of Halifax. It was cool. We saw a cannon on top of Citadel Hill, a star-shaped fortress built to protect the city in wartimes. We also visited our grandparents in Truro, which is 80km north of Halifax. We went for a hike at Victoria Park and saw a waterfall and a big set of stairs called Jacobs Ladder. We had lots of fun visiting family, having sleepovers with cousins, going swimming, shopping and eating at a few great pubs. I LOVE NOVA SCOTIA!

Shawn au Canada - Journal

We are starting our cross Canada journey in beautiful British Columbia.

I started out on Vancouver Island, in the capital city of Victoria. Victoria has lots of visitors, so there is lots to do. We went Whale watching, looking for the awesome Orca's and Grey Whales. I saw 10 whales, and boy are they big. One came right up to the boat. They are beautiful and I think this one was trained, because it waved at me. We also went to the Wax Museum, where they have over 300 wax figures. They looked like a real human, but frozen. Some times people dress up as wax figures and they come and shake your hand. It scared me when he moved. We then went to the Provincial Museum. It was very interesting about the history of BC and Canada. We saw lots of cool stuff. We went to Miniture World, the work was great. It looked like real people, but just small.

We then took BC Ferries to Vancouver. It was a long ride, but we saw beautiful scenery. On the ferry, I played some video games in the arcade. Then I had a hot dog with chocolate milk. It was great.

In Vancouver, the first thing I did, was go and visit my cousins and my Oupa. They live in Langley and it is really fun there. I have 2 cousins, Corissa and Collin. They are both younger than me, so they think I'm really cool.

We then headed back into Vancouver, to catch the Royal Hudson train up to Squamish. It was then a short ride up to Whistler. We went snowboarding and checked out the sites. Did you know, that the 2010 Winter Olympics are going to be held there.

We then headed off to the Okanagan. We went on Winery tours and visited some fruit stands. It is much warmer there than the rest of British Columbia. It was nice to have the sunshine.

Off we go again.....

North West Territories

After a big rest in Ontario, we flew back to Alberta and picked up my motorhome. We then headed for the North West Terrritories. There is lots to do and see here.

We found a campsite and set up camp. We had great neighbors who came and said hi as we were setting up. I decide a great way to end my journey, would be to have a seafood bar-b-que and serve up salmon stuffed with prawns. A favorite dish at my house back home. We planned this dinner to happen in 2 days, so I could go dogsledding and ice fishing. We thought the dinner would be great, so afterwards, we could sit and watch the Northern Lights.

I went dogsledding. It was fun. Having the dogs pull me around the course, I felt like I was three again. The dogs are very friendly and hard working. I liked it so much, that I went around the course 3 times. After that, I knew they had worked so hard, that I asked the owner if I could give them a treat. I had peanut butter flavored dog treats for all 6 of them. Their favorite food is dried salmon with a little bit of cinnamon on top.

After that, I went ice fishing. I drilled a hole in the ice and picked up my fishing rod. The hut was nice and warm, and we were able to have a fire in the fire place there, so it was very relaxing. We caught 10 fish, dried them out, and gave them to the dogs for dinner.

The next day, I spent all day, getting ready for our dinner. I had 20 people coming for dinner. It was good. We had snacky food and for dinner we had the salmon, prawns, coleslaw and potatoes. For dessert we had triple berry, chocolate fudge, peanut butter ice cream with whip cream and a cherry on top.

Finally, we sat down to watch the Northern Lights. It was amazing to watch Aurora dance through the sky. The colours were mixed with blue, red, green, yellow and orange. The Aurora dances and swirls, slower and then faster, mingling with the stars in the night sky. Sometimes the display of lights lasts only a few seconds, or it can last for up to a couple of hours. Sometimes, they happen several times in a night. So, keep your eyes open.

The next morning, I said goodbye to all my new friends, and started my journey back home. It was so nice to see my family again. The End.

on to Alberta....

We enjoyed our drive from BC onto the next provice of Alberta.

We went to Banff, to do some radical snowboarding. There was a race I entered. I came in 1st, of course. I have been practicing for 5 years, while the others, have only started racing this year. It was cold, but sunny. We went into the lodge and warmed up on delicious Hot Chocolate, sprinkled with cinnimon. Went back home to the camper and then we were on the road again.

We headed for Calgary. In 1988 they hosted the Winter Olympics. In the Olympic Park, you can see all the buildings that were built for it and are still being used. Like the Luge run, very cool.

We then went to famous Drumheller. It is 150 km from Calgary and is home to the world famous Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleaeontology. We went digging for bones and found a T-Rex tooth. I called over the paleaeontologist, Dr. Bob. He said it wasn't really a dig, but a special kids area to see what it is like to dig for bones. Dr. Bob said I could keep my tooth for a souvenier.

After a long day, it was time to hit the sack and get a good rest for the rest of our journey.

Dear journal, My hippopotamus and I are going to the Campbell River fishing pier today. It was a Sunday and we went to the farmers market and got vegetables for Jorg, my hippo. Day 2, We are going camping at Loveland Bay, a provinvial park on a man-made lake. We are camping in a motorhome with a very large hippo cage. In two weeks, Jorg, my best comrade, and I are going across Canada! Day 3 I just got a job as a travel agent. I haven't had a flight yet, but I really want to. I saw an ad on the TV. It said Campbell River has the best salmon fishing in the world. WOW! I better go fishing. Day 4, I caught a salmon. It was a big one! Jorg, my hippo, ate it, so I tried to push him off the pier. But he pushed me in the cold, dark, and gruesome water. Man Overboard!!!!

Dear Journal #2,

What a great flight from Campbell River to Yellowknife the capital of North West Territories. There sure are lots of mountains, but we crashed into an enormous one. I am the only survivor.

I walked about three hours and finally got to Yellowknife where I went to an old miners hotel and rested.

The next morning I woke up at 4:00am to go ice fishing. There were still awesome northern lights that lit up the sky. I travelled by snowmobile on my way to a remote lake. I saw a Gyr falcon then we jigged for char, through a hole in the ice. Later we watche the world champion dogsled races.

Yellowknife is the best location in the world for viewing the aurora borealis. It is home to about 20,000 people. Yellowknife's name comes from the fact that the local native people used knives with yellowish copper blades. Not only is there gold up here but there are diamonds too!

After I went for a walk on the streets to see if there really was gold under those old streets.

Bye, I have to go to my next trip...

Dear Journal #1,

This is the start of my trip across Canada where right now I am in Campbell River on a zodiac cruising at high speed. I am going whale and bear watching. Near the shore of Quadra Island we spot a black bear eating oysters. All of a sudden I was soaking wet from a whale splash. Then a bald eagle spotted a fish on the surface and swooped down and picked it up with its talons.

We then cruise down to the Campbell River Pier to go fishing and have some icecream. I catch a 40 pound salmon. Campbell River is the salmon capital of the world and this proves it.

I decide that I can't get enough of the water I mush go snorkling down the Campbell River where I spot hundreds of salmon heading up stream to spawn.

I hike the Canyon View trail all the way to Elk Falls and have a picnic lunch of salmon sandwiches and iced tea. Elk Falls Provincial Park has deep rock canyons and crashing waterfalls.

Off to my next adventure...

I also like swimming that's why we are going to Miracle Beach is a big beach with alot of trails and it is a provincal park with a naturehouse and a beautiful sandy beach. One of my friends said it's supposed to be very nice there I cant wait to get there neither can Joe! After that we are going to the pier is a like a big warf except it has logs holding it up. After we look at the banners and have some ice creame. We might fish to! Then were going to Quadra to have a campfire with a couple of my friends we will have hot dogs and marshmallows!

Dear journal
When we were caught in traffic I overheard some people talking about Moose Jaw, they said that there was a group of planes called the snowbirds. It sounded pretty exciting that every year the snowbirds do about 65 spectaculer shows in Canada and the U.S! Finaly the traffic was moving and we were headed for Dawson City. When we got there these poeple I didn't even know told me the average household income was $41,792 and after that they asked me for a dollar for telling me that so I just gave them one.I saw a museum so I parked my camper and I went into the history museum but it was so boring that I only remembered that Dawson was the capital city until 1951.After that it was to a R.V. resort. On the highway there was lots of bulletin boards advertising great places to stay, swimming pools and there was alot of turn off to gold mines. I guess today Dawson City's main undustries are tourism and gold . Then I took a very very long journey all the way to Halifax! In Halifax there was a fast food restaurant and a pet store right beside it an we wer starved so I grabbed a bite to eat then I bought my ferret some ferret's snacks then we went to a park nearby to eat as we were going to the park my ferret stared straight into the Atlantic ocean. In the corner of my eye a huge barge was passing by, it was a cool sight to see! Then there was a very loud noise coming from beside us it was a tour bus and it said on it's side: Welcome to one of the fourteen capitals of Canada : HALIFAX. there was another tour bus that said: Welcome to the sith biggest capital in Canada. Finally we got the park, after we ate we played at the park. then after we had left we found an R.V. resortand stayed there for the night. The next day we started leaving Halifax and headed for Prince edward island. There we went to Souris and to Charlottetown. i thought Charloottetown was the most interesting to me because it is the capital of Prince edward island. When were there, just lik Dawson City, there were lots of turn offs for mines. Charlottetown also had a lot of mills. Also like Dawson City tourism is an important industry. After I'm done visiting Charlottetow I'm going to a place that has about 1 000 000 canadians, Saskatchewan.

Dear Diary

I am traveling from the province of British Columbia to Toronto, Canada. I have always wanted to visit the CN tower. It was built in 1976, standing 1 815 feet high and here I am in the restaurant at the top of the tower. I can see the whole city because the nice waiter and waitress told me that the floor rotates once every 72 minutes. Sure does not feel like we are moving!? After we finish eating our food we will be visiting Niagara falls. Wow this is a lot of water, it's loud. My tourist guide told me that this waterfall is the 2nd largest on the globe. Standing approximately 167 feet high. I've made some new friends over this delicious ice cream cone. We sat and talked, they were a few years older than me. They had told me a story of a 63 year old teacher that had gone over the falls in a barrel. Yahoo what a ride it must have been!

Dear Diary
I am in Campbell River right now. I am going across Canada and back in a month am packing a lot of clothes, stuff and my cat Kiwi. I am visiting around before I go on by big journey. Backpacking on top of Ripple Rock Trail was fun and it's beautiful at the top overlooking the Seymour narrows. This is where the largest man made explosion took place so ships could pass through with great ease. We waved on to the sailors as they cruised by me. I bet that water is very cold. Campbell River is a great place for people who love the outdoors, camping, fishing, swimming, skiing, and the list goes on.
Now I am ready to travel up to Mt Washington, the only existing mountain here on Vancouver Island. What a view up here, no snow right now, but lots of bike trails and chalets to visit. Before we leave this paradise we had a chance to play on the bungie jump trampoline, yahoo!!!
